God Returning

B’shuv Yah, Sh’vut amo, yagayl yaakov, yismach Yisrael

When God returns and restores the fortunes of His people,
Jacob will exult, Israel will rejoice. (Psalm 14:7 and Psalm 53:7)

Even when it’s looking bad, with bullies in charge, and the poor oppressed, and cynicism reigning its disguised terror … still we look to God who is stirring in us beneath our despair. In the depths of our captivity a vision arises: God returning to our midst to free us from greed, fear and the illusions of separation. As God finds a home within us, we return home to ourselves, to our joy, and to the truth of our connection.

And I will trust in Your Love; as my heart rejoices in Your deliverance.
I will sing to God, who has been good to me. (Psalm 13:6)

Even in difficult times of anxiety and doubt, I can choose to trust in the power of love to save me from my fearful ruminations. By singing to God and resting my attention on the goodness in my life, I can override my apprehension and soar with the melody of gratefulness.

Seeing, Knowing, Loving Us

God is in his Holy Temple; God is on his Heavenly Throne.
Seeing, knowing, loving us! (Psalm 11:4)

The Divine Mystery permeates this world, making it into a place of holiness. The Divine Mystery is consciousness itself, which has the widest perspective and sees us clearly. That Divine gaze is filled with forgiveness, compassion and an abundance of wisdom, piercing all illusion. When we enter into a state of being seen, known and loved completely, we are transformed by that Divine gaze and we can know ourselves from that widest perspective.

(In this chant I am pronouncing the unpronounceable יְהֹוָ֤ה as HaVaYaH which is a name that invokes the aspect of God that is Being itself.)

Rise Up

Rise Up, Oh God; Lift up your hand; do not forget the most vulnerable. (Psalm 10:12)
[Click (or tap) to see the entire Psalm 10 in Hebrew and English (JPS 1985).]

Knowing that God is ultimately not separate from me, I turn inward and call on the Divine power within me to rise up and manifest its awesome power. And then I am reminded to use that power in protection of the most vulnerable, both within me and in the world. This might mean guarding, with loving care, the holy, fragile places within me. Or it might mean protecting the rights and dignity of the poor, the refugee, the lonely, the outcast, the forsaken ones of my world.

Entering the God-House in Hebrew
And I, by your abundant grace, enter your house. (Psalm 5:8)

As I come into the fullness of my own presence, I am rewarded by the generous grace of the Divine. By that grace, that loving-kindness, I am given entrance to the God-House, which is Unity consciousness. Entering the God-house means receiving the truth of Oneness.
