Tefillin Practice: The Seven Channels of Commitment

When I put my tefillin on each morning, I am connecting myself to the whole of life, to the Source of All, and to God as Beloved. I can get so caught up in the details of my life that I am in danger of losing my wide perspective, forgetting myconnection to the Whole of the Cosmos. This binding of vows that I give and receive is meant to set me on a path of Remembrance. My commitment has within it the requirement to stay open to the flow of blessing so that it flows through me into the world. That flow happens through seven distinct channels. As I wrap the tefillin I am checking to see if each of those channels are open. It is a diagnostic practice that will allow me to know where the spiritual work of the day might be focused. If I find a channel that is blocked or a channel of flow that is weak, then I might focus my loving attention on that aspect of my life and see how I might repair the channel. As I sing the words of betrothal and wrap the tefillin, I am checking in to each of these seven channels, and connecting up to the Great Source of Blessing.

Listening to the Voice of Wisdom

Ha-lo Chochma tikra, u-t’vunah titayn kola
Listening to the Voice of Wisdom Hebrew text
Isn’t it Wisdom calling and Understanding raising her voice! (Proverbs 8:1)

Ashrei Adam shomay-a li
Ashrei Adam Hebrew text
Happy is the one who listens to me. (Proverbs 8:34)

In Mishle, The Book of Proverbs, we are introduced to a great and powerful feminine archetype whose name is Chochma, Wisdom. She was there when the Earth was created and she speaks to us through the majesty of Creation. She is the Great Mother that delights in our existence, yet also warns us that when we sin against her, we destroy your own souls. She asks for our love and daily attention.

These two chants are designed to help us open to the voice of Chochma; to become attentive to her presence and message every day as she speaks through the Natural World.

Oath of Friendship: Hinay Yah

Hinay Yah Bayni u’vayncha, Ad Olam
Oath of Friendship Hebrew text
Here is God between me and you forever! (1st Samuel 20:23)

This is the Oath of friendship that Jonathan says to David. He invokes God’s presence in the space between himself and his friend, as a way of sanctifying the relationship. We can use this chant to acknowledge the holiness of the space between, the miracle of the Divine glue that connects us.

This chant can be done with movement as a two-part round facing a partner. If done in two concentric circles with each person in the inner circle facing out towards a partner, after each repetition, one circle steps to the right while the other stands still, so that you are facing a different partner.

The movements: When you sing “Hinay Yah…” with one hand’s flowing gesture, create a figure 8 between you and your partner. When you sing “Ad Olam” put your hands at your side facing forward and slowly lift them up as high as you can and slowly lower them.

Becoming Holy: K’doshim Ti’h’yu

K’doshim Ti’h’yu Ki Kadosh Ani
K'doshim Hebrew text
You shall be Holy, for I am Holy. (Leviticus 19:2)

We take upon ourselves the Mitzvah of becoming Holy, for that is who we truly are. To be holy means to practice kindness and compassion towards ourselves, our family, friends and community. Our love is imbued with the knowledge that the “other” is one with the “self.”

Everything we do as holy community rests on the strength and commitment of these words:
V’Ahavta L’rayacha Kamocha
Vahavta Hebrew text
You shall love your neighbor as yourself. (Leviticus 19:18)

The second chant is a message of permission and encouragement from your ancestor’s soul to you.
